What is Saveurs…
Saveurs… is a traditional French bakery, patisserie and chocolaterie located in the heart of Dartmouth, Devon, producing the most excellent handcrafted bread, pastries and cakes. Saveurs… is also a Café serving breakfast and light lunches, Monday to Saturday from 9.00am to 5.00pm. (Sunday CLOSED)
We have been trading since February 2008 and thrive in providing quality freshly baked daily products, sourcing local ingredients whenever possible. We use traditional methods to produce our breads, using the best French flours every day in our kitchen. We import different types of flour to produce a wide variety of loaves from traditional French baguette to campagne bread, walnut and seeded rye breads, as well as many others. Our sourdough, one of our most popular bread is made using a starter started in 1949, from an old English bakery located in Bristol which we refresh daily to keep it alive.
Julien and his team also produce some very fine individual patisseries. Julien’s experience and creativity over many years is brilliantly reflected in our bespoke cakes, from simple iced cakes decorated with sugary flowers to the most impressive croque en bouche or themed cakes. “Each occasion is Special and deserves a spectacular cake “says Julien.
Throughout the year, we also create a wide variety of handcrafted chocolate, from small bonbons to Easter bunnies and chickens, using the finest quality chocolate.
As well as being a master patissier, Julien has also developed a wide range of classic savoury items including various quiches, sausage rolls, filled baguettes, croque-monsieur and frittatas for our bakery-cafe. We also serve our Soup(s) du Jour with a generous selection of our handcrafted bread and terrines.
Background
As a child, Julien was already helping his mum with the baking, watching her carefully and learning. He knew from a very young age that he wanted to become a professional patissier. At 16 years old, Julien started his apprenticeship as baker, patissier and chocolatier in Grenoble, France. At 19 he travelled on the French Riviera for three years, working in some famous place in Cannes and the local area. He then, moved to Paris to work at Le Fouquet’s on the prestigious Champs-Elysees. Following this amazing experience, Julien decided it was time to travel again. So, he went to work in Switzerland first, for a couple of years and then came into the UK, where he was working as Pastry chef at the New Angel restaurant (one Michelin Star) in Dartmouth, Devon, to work with John Burton-Race.
Guylaine, meanwhile after training as a waitress, decided to pursue her dream to become a sommelière. She was trained by Michele Vételé – owner/sommelière of Anne de Bretagne restaurant (two Michelin Stars) in France. After her training, Guylaine decided to improve her English and flew to the UK, to work at the Midsummer House restaurant (two Michelin Stars) in Cambridge, run by the chef/owner Daniel Clifford. After two years and following a short work experience in Middle East, Guylaine had the opportunity to work for John Burton-Race at the New Angel, in Dartmouth, Devon, where Julien and she met.
After working together for a couple of years, Julien and Guylaine decided to open Saveurs… Dartmouth, their first adventure. Since opening, they have produced some of the finest patisseries in the South West of England, as well as taking part to Britain’s Best Bakery in 2008, where they ‘ve finished as the 5th best bakery in UK. Julien has also worked with John Burton-Race to set up a bakery in a local Hotel-Restaurant, training their bakers to reproduce some of Saveurs… freshly baked items.
In August 2020, Julien and Guylaine opened Andria Restaurant in Lower Street , Dartmouth with their long time friend and previous employee Luca Berardino.
